I'm hoping the DC trip includes a stop over in the Raleigh/Durham area for a visit with the Moores/Chevaliers. We have plenty of room, so please plan to stay with us at least one night! We are only 4 hours from DC, and not too far off the interstate, so you can hopefully stay on the way up or the way back. Lots of great museums in Raleigh/Durham if you have time for a longer visit, or we could go to the beach for the day. (Sept is usually perfect beach weather in NC!)

Sounds like you guys had a great time despite the adverse conditions! We've been out of town also doing our version of camping at a camper that Brian's parents own at Little Washington, NC on the river. I'm pretty sure it doesn't count as camping, though, when you have running water, beds, flushing toilet, microwave, refrigerator and even satellite TV! Still, there is something about being outdoors and away from home. We also spent a day at the beach this past weekend with some friends, which was fun. Sam LOVES the water and sand, but my girly girl Grace wasn't thrilled about the crashing waves (they were pretty gentle really), the messy sand, and the lack of bathroom facilities. I admit, she gets some of that from me. OK, all of that from me. :)

Gastrointestinal distress and the outdoors, not so much. hahaha Hopefully that won't be an issue. I think it's great that y'all camp so often...maybe we should try it this summer. I'm not afraid of nature or bugs...I always feel vulnerable to the less than desirable fellow human beings one might encounter outside the relative safety of four walls and locked doors.

My heart hurts for you when I read how you miss your dad. It's something I can't even begin to think about without feeling panic. I know how blessed I am to still have my dad, even if he is in another state and I only see him once a year.

I'm so impressed with all your hard work!

I think what you said about your name makes sense...I tried the Irene example and I did notice a difference. Maybe one of these days you can put one of those audio clips of the right way to say your name. I like both pronunciations of your last name. I wasn't too far off...a bit closer to the Filipino one. People get my last name (Koehler) wrong all the time, which surprises me. I hear "Ko-ELL-er" all the time. Huh? lol

Em, I'm so glad, too! I guess that's one of the good things about Google's ability to search a series of characters, regardless of what comes before or after it.

Denise, to be honest, I use the apostrophe, too. Both the character you mentioned and the apostrophe are not quite correct, but for the sake of convenience, I use them anyway. The correct character requires some finaggling unless one wants to download a Hawaiian or Maori keyboard, which is a terribly involved process. It's just so much easier to hit the apostrophe key with my pinky finger. :)

All the <i>'okina</i> is, is a hard stop of breath. You hear it in English when you say "uh-oh," or "huh-uh." When it comes at the beginning of a word, it just means you begin the rest of the word with a hard breath, instead of a slur. You might hear the difference if you say "Irene" kinda lazy like, and then try to say it the other way and say the "I" really sharp with a quick breath. Clear as mud? Ha ha!

"Laranang" is pronounced two ways, depending on who's saying it. In the U.S. and Canada, most people say "LAIR-uh-nang" (last syllable rhymes with "gang"). People of Filipino descent usually pronounce it "luh-RAH-nung" (roll the "r").

In any case, don't feel bad at all if you don't quite get either first or last name--spelling or pronunciation! I can't tell you how many Cajun names I've butchered!
